{"id":150256,"date":"2024-11-20T20:00:13","date_gmt":"2024-11-20T10:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?guid=aae7e119dbb5e63763ec181370db4f2a"},"modified":"2024-11-20T20:00:13","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T10:00:13","slug":"how-does-national-highways-performance-vary-across-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=150256","title":{"rendered":"How does National Highways\u2019 performance vary across England?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">How does National Highways\u2019 performance vary across England?<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\"><time datetime=\"2024-11-20T10:00:13+00:00\" title=\"Wednesday, 20 November, 2024 - 10:00\" class=\"datetime\">Wed, 20\/11\/2024 &#8211; 10:00<\/time><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"orr-published-date\">20 November 2024<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-standfirst field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item\">As we publish a new interactive dashboard, Stephen Bussell explores what our regional benchmarking data tells us. <\/div>\n<div class=\"orr-share-links\">\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=How%20does%20National%20Highways%E2%80%99%20performance%20vary%20across%20England%3F&amp;url=http%3A\/\/www.orr.gov.uk\/search-news\/how-does-national-highways-performance-vary-across-england\"  class=\"orr-share-twitter\" title=\"Share to Twitter\">Twitter<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/sharing\/share-offsite?url=http%3A\/\/www.orr.gov.uk\/search-news\/how-does-national-highways-performance-vary-across-england\"  class=\"orr-share-linkedin\" title=\"Share to Linkedin\">Linkedin<\/a><a href=\"mailto:?subject=How%20does%20National%20Highways%E2%80%99%20performance%20vary%20across%20England%3F&amp;body=http%3A\/\/www.orr.gov.uk\/search-news\/how-does-national-highways-performance-vary-across-england\" class=\"orr-share-email\" title=\"Send to email\">email<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-components field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__label visually-hidden\">Components<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>We hold National Highways to account for its performance across a range of government set performance indicators that reflect the priorities of Strategic Road Network users and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>To support this, we\u2019ve developed an <a href=\"https:\/\/app.powerbi.com\/view?r=eyJrIjoiMmFlYWNhOTYtNWI4My00NzRjLTlmZGEtZjNiN2U3ODgyNmQyIiwidCI6IjIzMjM3OTk2LTdmM2EtNDM5NC04MGY1LTQ2MGNiYzA3NjEzYiJ9\">interactive dashboard<\/a>, allowing users to explore different performance themes and track changes over time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The performance indicators are set by government for each Road Investment Strategy (RIS) and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/road-investment-strategy-2-ris2-2020-to-2025\">RIS2<\/a> (which runs from 2020 to 2025) are organised around themes including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improving safety for all<\/li>\n<li>fast and reliable journeys<\/li>\n<li>a well maintained and resilient network<\/li>\n<li>being environmentally responsible, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>meeting the needs of all users<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>National Highways is responsible for achieving national-level targets for each of its Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and we report on its performance in our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orr.gov.uk\/monitoring-and-regulation\/roads-monitoring\/annual-assessment-national-highways\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"f91e92f6-50f1-4b42-a3ee-542a3c5a8148\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">Annual Assessment<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Regional variations in detail<\/h2>\n<p>While targets are set nationally, we also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orr.gov.uk\/monitoring-and-regulation\/roads-monitoring\/benchmarking-national-highways-performance-and-efficiency\/national-highways-performance-dashboard\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"2494054d-1723-4edb-bcad-999bf4f5cd20\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">analyse performance differences<\/a> across National Highways&#8217; six operating regions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2023-24 for example, we noted a widening gap in road surface condition KPI performance between the best- and worst-performing regions. Nationally, over 96% of road surfaces meet the &#8216;good condition&#8217; KPI target. However, the East of England lags behind at less than 93%. Put differently, almost double the proportion of roads in the East fail to meet the condition benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orr.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-10\/benchmarking-national-highways-road-surface-condition-2023_0.pdf\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"d41ed760-193a-4bb0-b637-10048cb2ea1c\" data-entity-substitution=\"media\">Pavement Condition benchmarking report<\/a> notes that a higher prevalence of difficult to maintain concrete roads in the East partly accounts for this discrepancy, though it does not fully explain the difference.
