Those regulatory interventions highlighted the challenges the industry faces in securing sufficient power.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, it turned out that data centers would need much more power than had been realized\u2014just at a time when regulators and community organizations were growing increasingly critical of the sector&#8217;s existing demand.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.telegeography.com\/data-center-research-service\">Data Center Research Service<\/a> estimates that, as of 2024, colocation operators in the top ten data center markets by MW consume about 13 gigawatts (GW) of power.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s enough power to generate electricity for roughly 10 million homes\u2014or, in this case, only about 1,000 commercial data centers!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/track.hubspot.com\/__ptq.gif?a=594292&amp;k=14&amp;r=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.telegeography.com%2Fdata-centers-thats-a-lot-of-power&amp;bu=https%253A%252F%252Fblog.telegeography.com&amp;bvt=rss\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" style=\"min-height:1px!important;width:1px!important;border-width:0!important;margin-top:0!important;margin-bottom:0!important;margin-right:0!important;margin-left:0!important;padding-top:0!important;padding-bottom:0!important;padding-right:0!important;padding-left:0!important; \"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The data center market is in the midst of an unprecedented shift that started\u2014publicly at least\u2014five years ago with the announced moratoria on new development in Singapore and Frankfurt.
