{"id":148067,"date":"2024-11-08T07:38:08","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T21:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=117892"},"modified":"2024-11-08T07:38:08","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T21:38:08","slug":"celebrating-125-years-of-two-rockhampton-railway-icons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=148067","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating 125 years of two Rockhampton railway icons"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Historical-photo-Archer-Park-Railway-station.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\"><figcaption>Image\/Queensland Rail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0Two Rockhampton landmarks have reached a major milestone with the Alexandria Railway Bridge and Archer Park railway station turning 125 years old.<\/strong><span id=\"more-117892\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queensland Rail Historian Greg Hallam said the landmarks were vital pieces of rail infrastructure which continued to serve the community to this day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c125 years ago, on 6 November 1899, the Alexandria Railway Bridge officially opened, providing a vital link between two halves of Rockhampton along the North Coast rail line,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA month later, on 11 December 1899, Archer Park railway station was also opened to the public. Plans for both the historical pieces of infrastructure were first produced in 1898 by architect Henrik Hansen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHansen had joined Queensland Rail in 1877 and was responsible for the design of many utilitarian buildings and structures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hansen was also responsible for the design of the railway station at Mount Morgan in 1898, and the refreshment rooms at Emerald Railway Station in 1900 which share similar features including an all-over arch roof or carriage shade, designed to provide cover to passengers and goods being loaded at the platform.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_117894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117894\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Alexander-Bridge-construction-1899-2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Alexander-Bridge-construction-1899-2-300x231.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Alexander-Bridge-construction-1899-2-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Alexander-Bridge-construction-1899-2-1024x788.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Alexander-Bridge-construction-1899-2-768x591.png 768w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Alexander-Bridge-construction-1899-2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-117894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image\/Queensland Rail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cArcher Park railway station serviced passenger services until 1970.
