RECONSTRUCTION of the 75km line linking Afghanistan and Uzbekistan began on February 21, according to the Bakhtar news agency.<\/p>\n
Built more than a decade ago, the cross-border line has been damaged and out of use due to conflict in the region.<\/p>\n
The rebuilding work is expected to complete within three months, at a cost of $US 6.3m.<\/p>\n
Last year the governments of Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan signed a joint protocol setting out their intention to build a 760km UAP Railway connecting the three countries.<\/p>\n
This line could open in 2027 and estimates suggest it could carry 15 million tonnes of freight a year by 2030.<\/p>\n
