{"id":1423,"date":"2022-02-08T10:55:41","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T00:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?guid=b52b5fe3674c0c8fe791caa4cdf1e268"},"modified":"2022-02-08T10:55:41","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T00:55:41","slug":"campaign-to-save-national-rail-services-gaining-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=1423","title":{"rendered":"Campaign to Save National Rail Services Gaining Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A campaign asking the Government and KiwiRail to back the continuation of axed national passenger rail services continues to grow with more than 4,500 people signing an online petition. \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\nThe Save Our Trains campaign was started by members of the public who were concerned about KiwiRail\u2019s announcement in December 2021 to pull out of providing same day scheduled passenger services on both islands. \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\nA Save Our Trains spokesperson, Michael Nicholson, said: \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\n*\u201cKiwiRail\u2019s decision decimates the limited national network we had. It leaves us with disconnected urban services and large parts of the country unserved by rail. It just isn\u2019t good enough, especially when the Government talks so much about regional economic development and climate action.\u201d* \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\nAnother Save Our Trains spokesperson, Paul Callister, said:  \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\n*\u201cWe need to make bold decisions around the future of public transport if we\u2019re really serious about making a dent in CO2 emissions. National passenger rail needs to be part of the solution. But it\u2019s also a about creating a service that meets the needs of local communities. The first step is to save what we have.\u201d* \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\nThe petition to Save Our National Passenger Rail Network reads:  \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\n*We call on the Government and KiwiRail to commit to maintaining existing intercity passenger rail services.
