{"id":13858,"date":"2024-02-22T08:29:48","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T22:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=115405"},"modified":"2024-02-22T08:29:48","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T22:29:48","slug":"ensuring-safety-and-peace-of-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=13858","title":{"rendered":"Ensuring safety and peace of mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Mobility specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transdev.com\/en\/\">Transdev<\/a> is using community, culture and campaigns as a way of transforming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/sydney-light-rail-unites-for-worldpride\/\">Sydney Light Rail<\/a> journeys into a secure mode of travel.<\/strong><span id=\"more-115405\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Transdev is harnessing the expertise of government and community leaders and customer feedback to help make commuting by Sydney Light Rail a safer way to travel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Transport experts, emergency service representatives, academics, teachers and high school students all attended a recent Transdev public safety forum which aimed to understand and improve how youth interact with public transport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The forum, held at Allianz Stadium, enabled experts to explain youth thought patterns, youth transport use and how early exposure<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to public transport can positively shape lifelong habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Transdev runs these safety forums regularly to work together with communities and specialist agencies to make tram travel safer for everyone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Last year, the safety forum focus was on large scale special events in the lead up to World Pride and the FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup, periods in which Sydney Light Rail safely moved more than five million people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Transdev Australia and New Zealand CEO Brian Brennan said connecting with different groups at these forums was a powerful vehicle for change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cTransdev, along with ALTRAC Light Rail, Transport for NSW and tram manufacturer Alstom, are always looking for ways to better understand our customers and make our services safer and more accessible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThese forums are always insightful and a very practical way to hear a diverse range of views and latest research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIt not only brings a range of local representatives and community leaders together but fosters closer working relationships amongst everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cOur most recent focus on youth was apt and very moving to hear from students how they interact with Sydney trams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cAnd we were able to follow-up after the forum to talk more with schools along the tram corridor about how to travel safe and avoid some riskier behaviours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Involving partners and the community collectively in safety is one way Transdev is realising its Safety First focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">A workplace culture that puts safety first is another supporting pillar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115407\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115407\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TRANSDEV-15-1-copy.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-115407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TRANSDEV-15-1-copy-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TRANSDEV-15-1-copy-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TRANSDEV-15-1-copy-712x1024.jpg 712w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TRANSDEV-15-1-copy-768x1105.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TRANSDEV-15-1-copy.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Trandev is pround of its diverse, motivated and informed team. Our Safety First approach is about very deliberate and consistent daily practice,\u201d Brennan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Our <\/span><span class=\"s1\">employees understand what the company does and why, our mission, and they see the part they play in it. We have a real reputation for succession opportunities in <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the business.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve worked hard to build a great culture at Sydney Light Rail. I\u2019m very proud of that and it\u2019s reflected in our low industry rates of absenteeism and turnover.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Transdev\u2019s Sydney Light Rail team has also raised about $45,000 for a range of local charities from the St Vinnies CEO Sleepout, Movember to Wear it Purple Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s also a workplace where people are encouraged and enabled to report and action change,\u201d Brennan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cWe value our people, we invest in them and we communicate openly and regularly with them because transport starts with our people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Every team member is trained, empowered and equipped to do their roles well to ensure safe services. This year, Transdev supported more than 140 of its frontline leaders, including many in light rail, with customised end-to-end development training via the Trans\u2019Lead program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Transdev Sydney Light Rail Managing Director Arsene Durand-Raucher said having a motivated and informed team helped to keep people focused on their roles and working safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cSafety is in our DNA because our people live and breathe safety in each of their own roles,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cEvery team member, regardless of where they work &#8211; as a tram driver, customer service officer or cleaner, has a part to play in keeping the network safe and running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Durand-Raucher said safety habits, measures and improvements across all operational areas was part of ensuring a safe tram network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Raising awareness about safety and asking for community support and cooperation was another element of Transdev\u2019s Safety First focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">With record passenger numbers on Sydney Light Rail, Transdev runs regular public safety campaigns to remind customers how to stay safe around trams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The recent \u201cDon\u2019t Run the Risk\u201d campaign was designed to reduce incidents where pedestrians are distracted and unaware or cross on red lights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cWith most passengers plugged into their devices and headphones, we need to constantly remind people to be aware of their surroundings,\u201d Durand-Raucher said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s very simple things but just being aware, looking up from your phone, stepping away from trams, holding on while taking off and stopping, holding your child\u2019s hand firmly in yours, planning ahead and allowing enough travel time &#8211;
