{"id":133169,"date":"2024-09-25T08:06:01","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T22:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=117495"},"modified":"2024-09-25T08:06:01","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T22:06:01","slug":"tunnel-boring-machines-on-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=133169","title":{"rendered":"Tunnel boring machines on the way"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Tunnel-boring-machine-banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\"><figcaption>Image\/Victoria&#8217;s Big Build<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The first four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for <a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/projects\/suburban-rail-loop\/srl-east\">SRL East<\/a> will begin arriving on site next year \u2013 and will be in the ground in 2026 tunnelling between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span id=\"more-117495\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Herrenknecht\u00a0\u2013 one of the world\u2019s leading manufacturers \u2013 is the preferred contractor to\u00a0supply the TBMs that will drill 16kms of twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Two of the machines will be remanufactured after being used on the Sydney Metro project \u2013 significantly reducing the carbon footprint of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/understanding-the-suburban-rail-loop\/\">SRL<\/a> works. All four TBMs will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Measuring 7.24m in diameter and between 120 and 150m long, the first TBMs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/news\/suburban-rail-loop\/tunnels-south-change-of-scope\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will launch from Clarinda<\/a> and travel up to 90m a week \u2013 two travelling south to Cheltenham and two north towards Glen Waverley. The TBMs will arrive on site for assembly in late 2025 and will start tunnelling in early 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a world first, one of the crews operating the TBMs will be an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/news\/suburban-rail-loop\/all-women-crew-to-build-srl-tunnels\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all-women team<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and more than 650 women have already applied for selection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Two types of TBMs will be used to match ground conditions along the SRL East alignment \u2013 two slurry machines will be used in the northern section, while two convertible machines will be used in the softer ground further south. In a Victorian first, these two machines will be converted from slurry to earth pressure balance (EPB) machines between Heatherton and Cheltenham.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Construction of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/projects\/suburban-rail-loop\/srl-east\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SRL East between Cheltenham and Box Hill<\/a>\u00a0is forging ahead with works underway at all 6 station sites, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/news\/suburban-rail-loop\/burwood-blitz-as-srl-powers-ahead\"  rel=\"noopener\">TBM launch site in Burwood<\/a>\u00a0and the tunnel access structure in Heatherton.
