That, however, may be about to change with an ingenious yet simple new solution. It\u2019s time to meet the Car Carrying Container.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-56272\"><\/span>Metrans, the pan-European rail logistics operator, has been testing what they call their Car Carrier Containers (CCC). Except, they\u2019re not quite containers but more like the skeleton of a 20-foot equivalent unit, minus the roof bars. In other words, a lightweight and convenient way to carry two cars in the space of a single TEU, albeit with a slightly higher loading gauge.<\/p>\n<h2>Considerable capital investment<\/h2>\n<p>Conventional car carriers have been a common sight on European railways for decades. However, the rolling stock has only one use and represents a considerable capital investment, such as the car carriers used by DB Cargo UK for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2022\/02\/24\/db-cargo-puts-toyota-cars-on-trains-between-uk-and-france\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">their Toyota contracts<\/a>. That\u2019s why a significant proportion of vehicle transport needs are met with road trailers, specially designed for the job but versatile enough to reach individual customers. As easy as delivering a shipping container. Image: METRANS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Metrans, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssc-railtec.com\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">SSC Railtech GmbH<\/a> of Graz, Austria, has been testing a unique cradle design capable of being loaded with two cars, double-decked. The cradles are compatible with conventional intermodal loading equipment and sit on conventional intermodal wagons. The compatibility with multi-purpose equipment may well give the CCC a competitive edge and make last-mile deliveries possible with flatbed road trailers.<\/p>\n<h2>Testing and presentations<\/h2>\n<p>Testing started back in February when Metrans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/intermodal\/2024\/05\/30\/metrans-terminal-in-slovakia-just-got-bigger\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Dunajsk\u00e1 Streda terminal<\/a> in southern Slovakia took delivery of the four prototype units. \u201cPartnering with SSC Railtec GmbH, we put these giants through their paces in a series of loading tests,\u201d said Peter Kiss, <a href=\"https:\/\/metrans.eu\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">CEO at Metrans<\/a>. \u201cCar manufacturers can now load their vehicles directly onto our intermodal units and send them off by road or rail, knowing their valuable cargo is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fluid wp-image-56275 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Reach-Staker-easily-handles-a-CCC-Metrans.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Reach-Staker-easily-handles-a-CCC-Metrans.jpeg 960w, https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Reach-Staker-easily-handles-a-CCC-Metrans-336x224.jpeg 336w, https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Reach-Staker-easily-handles-a-CCC-Metrans-480x320.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Reach-Staker-easily-handles-a-CCC-Metrans-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">An intermodal terminal Reach Staker can easily handle a CCC. Image: \u00a9 METRANS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With reach stackers or gantry cranes, the so-called piggy bags, doing the heavy lifting, Metrans say there is no risk of damage during loading operations. The cradles themselves are robust, reinforced steel. They are rated for a load of 4.2 tonnes &#8211; enough to carry two saloons, including heavier electric models. Refining the CCC units\u2019 design has incorporated height adjustment and the ability to stack empty units three high.
