\nWhen the Auckland Harbour Bridge opened in 1959, connecting Auckland to the North Shore, its four lanes were heralded in the Auckland Star as \u201ca new era of city progress\u201d. Prime minister Walter Nash hailed it as \u201can event of nationwide significance.\u201d\u00a0 \\
