{"id":129,"date":"2024-01-02T11:25:02","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T01:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=114932"},"modified":"2024-01-02T11:25:02","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T01:25:02","slug":"public-transport-packed-for-new-years-eve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=129","title":{"rendered":"Public transport packed for New Year\u2019s Eve"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"node-section-pre-content\">\n<div class=\"node-content__element node-content__element--summary nsw-intro\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Public transport was the way to go to ring in 2024 in Sydney, with data from Transport for NSW revealing more than 700,000 journeys were made to and from the CBD on train, bus, ferry and light rail services for New Year&#8217;s Eve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span id=\"more-114932\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"node-section-content\">\n<div class=\"node-content__element\">\n<div class=\"nsw-wysiwyg-content\">\n<p>With most harbour vantage points not ticketed this year, Sydneysiders and travellers flocked into the city to watch the world-class fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of revellers caught public transport to and from\u00a0the CBD, as passengers took the operational advice to leave the car at home, leave plenty of\u00a0travel time,\u00a0\u00a0and hop on services to get\u00a0 where they needed to go.<\/p>\n<p>Transport for NSW had an extra 1000 trains running day and night on New Year\u2019s Eve, plus an extra 1200 buses, and light rail services were running every 10 minutes until 4am.<\/p>\n<p>Metro services\u00a0 doubled in frequency with services running until 4am.<\/p>\n<p>From 4am on December 31, 2023 to 4am on January 1, 2024, there were 416,049 trips into Sydney\u2019s CBD and surrounding precincts, based on Opal data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bus \u2013 59,873<\/li>\n<li>Ferry \u2013 22,158<\/li>\n<li>Light Rail \u2013 44,794<\/li>\n<li>Train \u2013 289, 224<\/li>\n<li>Total \u2013 416,049<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over that same period, there were 325,613 trips out of Sydney\u2019s CBD and surrounding precincts, based on Opal data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bus \u2013 46,510<\/li>\n<li>Ferry \u2013 22,279<\/li>\n<li>Light Rail \u2013 45,443<\/li>\n<li>Train \u2013 211,381<\/li>\n<li>Total \u2013 325,613<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Transport Minister Jo Haylen said New Year\u2019s Eve was by far the biggest day on the transport calendar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year, we saw a 20 per cent increase in the number of people arriving into our city by train, compared to last year\u2019s celebrations,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving hundreds of thousands of people in and out of the city over a small period of time isn\u2019t easy, but everyone was patient, in good spirits and listened carefully to our staff on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Year\u2019s Eve was a big test for Sydney\u2019s public transport and follows months of important work our Government has been doing to improve reliability and performance.
