This week, parts of Central and Eastern Europe were hit by heavy rainfall and subsequent floods. As companies are still examining the damage, Austrian \u00d6BB provides RailFreight.com with a preliminary assessment: \u201cWe cannot yet accurately quantify the damage here. But it is immense!\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-56220\"><\/span>Floods engulfed various parts of Central and Eastern Europe this week. Messages of rail disruptions came in from Austria, Czechia, Poland, Hungary and Romania. It is clear that the impact on rail freight is significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extreme weather conditions in large parts of Europe are also having an extreme impact on freight transport\u201d, Austrian rail operator \u00d6BB says in a statement. \u201cMajor routes and corridors are currently blocked. Unfortunately, forecasts indicate that the critical situation will continue for several more days.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/infrastructure\/2024\/09\/16\/extreme-weather-brings-chaos-to-rail-freight-in-czechia\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ostrava-flooded-station-128x128.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/infrastructure\/2024\/09\/16\/extreme-weather-brings-chaos-to-rail-freight-in-czechia\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">Extreme weather brings chaos to rail freight in Czechia<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Stopped traffic<\/h2>\n<p>Due to the floodings, many trains have ground to a halt. \u00d6BB says that \u201cborder crossings have stopped working. In Austria, transit trains have had to be stopped to avoid overloading the rail network or because it is not possible to continue the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany lines, whether industrial sidings or main lines, are flooded. Before rail traffic can resume, the tracks must undergo a complete inspection and maintenance process for safety reasons, causing further delays\u201d, the rail operator adds.<\/p>\n<h2>Extent of floods damage still unclear<\/h2>\n<p>A spokesperson from \u00d6BB tells RailFreight.com that the exact extent of the damage is still unknown. The water needs to recede before that state of infrastructure can be assessed. The financial consequences are also not yet clear: \u201cWe cannot yet accurately quantify the damage here. But it is immense!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports coming in from all throughout the region suggest that the damage is indeed rather significant. Image: \u00a9 Spr\u00e1va \u017eeleznic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/09\/17\/romanian-rail-freight-traffic-also-falls-victim-to-heavy-rainfall\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Romania<\/a>, a 5-kilometre stretch of railway was damaged and partially washed away near Moldova. Traffic in various parts of the country was suspended or severely limited at 20 to 30 kilometres an hour. Lastly, a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/09\/16\/southern-poland-rail-freight-also-hit-by-floods\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">PKP Cargo<\/a>\u2019s locomotive fleet was flooded in the southern Polish region of Silesia.
