A train stationmaster was suspended Friday and faces disciplinary action after allegedly giving an order that would have placed two passenger trains on a head-on collision course on the same stretch of track on Athens\u2019 suburban railway, railway operator Hellenic Train said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company said another stationmaster at a different station and the drivers of both trains quickly realized the mistake and stopped one of the trains about half a kilometer before it entered the single track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hellenic Train said Friday the \u201cstrict adherence\u201d to railway traffic regulations, which it said include multiple safeguards, \u201cis the determining factor in the smooth running of railway traffic.\u201d It said it was further reinforcing staff training \u201cin order to avert isolated mistakes\u201d and improve services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday we could truly have had \u2026 a serious incident which was averted thanks to the professionalism and commitment of the train drivers, who realized what was about to happen,\u201d the train drivers\u2019 union said in statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A prosecutor has also ordered a preliminary criminal investigation into the incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trains involved were the Athens-Airport and Kiato-Athens services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Friday\u2019s incident comes about a year and a half after a similar mistake led to the worst railway disaster in Greek history, in which 57 people \u2013 mostly university students heading back to classes after a holiday \u2013 were killed when a passenger train smashed into an oncoming freight train which had been mistakenly placed on the same track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
