Elders from T\u0101maki Makaurau Auckland iwi led a traditional dawn blessing for a symbolic unveiling of the distinctive panels that wrap around the upper levels of City Rail Link\u2019s Karanga-a-Hape<\/a> Station.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The project\u2019s main delivery partner, Link Alliance, lifted more than a hundred of the blue and white panels, each one containing a selection of blue and white aluminium fins, to complete what is known as the station\u2019s sky element \u2013 panels that serve both a modern-day function while acknowledging the city\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

They protect Karanga-a-Hape\u2019s ventilation and air intake systems while their diamond pattern design represents Te \u0100tea, the stars of the eternal cosmos, and the place of Aotearoa New Zealand in Te Ikaroa (the Milky Way).<\/p>\n

\u201cAucklanders already know that we\u2019re delivering a world-class railway and now they have a further reminder that it is one unique to their city as well,\u201d says Dr Sean Sweeney, City Rail Link Ltd\u2019s Chief Executive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a very positive partnership with iwi through our Mana Whenua Forum and the great, distinctly T\u0101maki Makaurau, contribution the Forum is making is something I am immensely proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karanga-a-Hape\u2019s sky element is designed by iwi artist Reuben Kirkwood (Ng\u0101i Tai) alongside Link Alliance\u2019s architecture team.<\/p>\n

“Reuben’s work beautifully encapsulates the binding of the spiritual and mortal realms in an otherwise contemporary urban setting, elevating the Mercury Lane elevation at Karanga-a-Hape to the ethereal,\u201d says Adrian Pettit from CRL\u2019s Mana Whenua Forum.<\/p>\n

Sky elements and their ties to M\u0101ori tradition and storytelling were unveiled earlier this year at CRL\u2019s two other new stations, Te Waihorotiu and Maungawhau.<\/p>\n

Designs at all three stations reflect the M\u0101ori creation myth of Ranginui (the sky father) and Papat\u016b\u0101nuku (the earth mother), and their son T\u0101ne Mahuta, the god of the forest. Traditional designs at Karanga-a-Hape Station also acknowledge the story of Hape, a significant ancestor who journeyed to Aotearoa on the back of a stingray.<\/p>\n

Fit outs continue across all three stations.\u00a0 When CRL opens in 2026<\/a>, Karanga-a-Hape will be New Zealand\u2019s deepest railway station with platforms 33 metres below ground.<\/p>\n
