he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Next-generation\">&#8216;Next generation&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-15.jpeg\" alt=\"model railway\" class=\"wp-image-12268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-15.jpeg 976w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-15-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-15-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image caption,&nbsp;Pete Waterman disputed claims model railways are dying out<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Warley Model Railway Exhibition due to be held at the NEC in Birmingham was cancelled in January &#8220;for the foreseeable future&#8221;, the organisers said they believed the pastime to be &#8220;alive and well at grassroots level&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they said &#8220;the next generation of younger enthusiasts required to take over the staffing and running of such prestigious events does not seem to be materialising&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waterman said organisers of events need to focus on engaging young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They say [young people] are going to go and play computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m seeing more children and youngsters wanting to get involved with us than I&#8217;ve ever seen before.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waterman has organised his own model railway event, to be held in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said his team of modellers will unveil the world&#8217;s biggest layout, which is currently under construction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t build them a layout and say, &#8216;that&#8217;s for you&#8217;
