{"id":11978,"date":"2024-02-16T22:37:23","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T12:37:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=11978"},"modified":"2024-02-16T22:37:23","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T12:37:23","slug":"network-rail-investigating-historic-mine-found-beneath-walkden-station-during-accessibility-upgrade-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=11978","title":{"rendered":"Network Rail investigating historic mine found beneath Walkden station during accessibility upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Surveys are due to take place at Walkden station in Greater Manchester after the discovery of historic mine shafts delayed work to improve accessibility for passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers discovered the shafts when designing the multi-million-pound \u2018Access for All\u2019 upgrade of the station.<\/p>\n<p>Work on the new lift cannot start until the mining issues are fully understood.<\/p>\n<p>When complete, the work will make 136-year-old station accessible for all passengers for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers are advised to check before they travel on Sunday 3 and 10 March, where the station will be closed, and rail replacement buses will be in operation.<\/p>\n<p>To carry out the surveys, engineers will drill beneath the surface of the station to understand the ground conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Fleming, sponsor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Network Rail<\/a>, said:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m sorry for the delay of these much-needed improvements at Walkden station.
