Both Sweden and Norway, which both have parts of the line on their territory, agree on that. However, the countries present different findings on how much capacity should grow exactly.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-55757\"><\/span>Both Sweden and Norway commissioned investigations into the need for extra capacity on the Iron Ore Line. The studies took place against the background of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/07\/03\/yet-another-derailment-on-the-iron-ore-line\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">three derailments<\/a> in relatively short succession, which put the line in the spotlight as a crucial artery for goods and military mobility.<\/p>\n<p>Bane NOR, Norway\u2019s infrastructure manager, found that 66 trains will need to pass the line by 2040. \u201cWe are in the process of planning to achieve such a capacity\u201d, says Thor Br\u00e6kkan, a representative of Norway\u2019s Railway Directorate, which commissioned the study.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/business\/2024\/08\/16\/lkab-profits-nearly-halved-due-to-continuous-problems-on-iron-ore-line\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/shutterstock_735153055-128x128.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/business\/2024\/08\/16\/lkab-profits-nearly-halved-due-to-continuous-problems-on-iron-ore-line\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">LKAB profits nearly halved due to continuous problems on Iron Ore Line<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Sweden has different findings<\/h2>\n<p>However, Br\u00e6kkan points to diverging results in a study conducted by Sweden\u2019s transport administration. \u201cThe problem is that the transport administration in Sweden operates with completely different figures\u201d, says Br\u00e6kkan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Swedes believe the need will not be greater than 45 trains a day in 2040 on the Kiruna &#8211; border section. They have, therefore, not initiated corresponding planning for increased capacity,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt does not particularly help the overall traffic on the Iron Ore Line if the capacity cannot be increased on both sides of the border at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, both sides agree on the need to increase the axle load to 32,5 tonnes, and they are increasingly engaged in cooperation forums, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jernbanedirektoratet.no\/jernbanemagasinet\/okende-behov-for-samarbeid-over-grensen-i-nord\/?utm_campaign=nyhetsbrevaugust2024&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=nyhetsbrev&amp;link_id=92ac74d4-aff0-4f32-ac72-88a71d08584c\"  rel=\"noopener\">Railway Directorate<\/a>.
