{"id":117539,"date":"2024-08-30T13:27:58","date_gmt":"2024-08-30T03:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=117274"},"modified":"2024-08-30T13:27:58","modified_gmt":"2024-08-30T03:27:58","slug":"celebrating-the-end-of-metro-tunnel-works-in-south-yarra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=117539","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating the end of Metro Tunnel works in South Yarra"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/South-Yarra.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\"><figcaption>Image\/Victoria&#8217;s Big Build<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/metro-tunnel-testing-enters-new-phase-to-get-ready-for-2025\/\">Metro Tunnel<\/a> construction\u00a0works at South Yarra\u00a0are now complete.<\/strong><span id=\"more-117274\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To celebrate this milestone, South Yarra locals joined the Metro Tunnel Project at the upgraded Siding Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The day kicked off with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, followed by live music, free activities, complimentary food and drink, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Major construction in South Yarra was completed in May, over the past 7 years Victoria&#8217;s Big Build:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>connected the Metro Tunnel to the Cranbourne\/Pakenham rail line<\/li>\n<li>installed important communications and power equipment that will help the Metro Tunnel work<\/li>\n<li>upgraded South Yarra Siding Reserve and created two new pocket parks<\/li>\n<li>widened the rail corridor and moved the Frankston line and Gippsland line tracks<\/li>\n<li>rebuilt and reopened the William Street bridge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The South Yarra Siding Reserve, formerly a sloping area of grass alongside the rail line, was closed to the public in 2018 for works.<\/p>\n<p>The upgraded reserve features more than 2400 square metres of lawn, landscaping, new pedestrian and bike paths, improved lighting and a new picnic area with seating.<\/p>\n<p>The reserve also features 2 First Nations artworks, by Barkindji man\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/projects\/metro-tunnel\/community\/art\/legacy-artwork\/tunnel-entrance-artworks\/kent-morris-where-we-walk\">Kent Morris<\/a>\u00a0and Wurundjeri Elder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/projects\/metro-tunnel\/community\/art\/legacy-artwork\/tunnel-entrance-artworks\/aunty-kim-wandin-chris-joy-murrup-biik\">Aunty Kim Wandin, with collaborating artist, Christine Joy<\/a>.
