Melbourne<\/a> train services are returning to normal after a major rail line was suspended on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A serious incident requiring emergency services forced the pause on the Craigieburn line between Essendon and Broadmeadows stations just before 3pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replacement buses were brought in to cater for the peak afternoon demand before the line was able to be reopened more than three hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some delays remain, with travellers told to allow an extra 20 minutes for their journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, commuters were told to consider other ways home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe encourage passengers travelling on this line today to plan ahead, allow extra time for your journey, and consider alternative travel plans, such as altering your departure time, or using a different mode of public transport,\u201d Public Transport Victoria (PTV) said in an update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities said there were restrictions on the rail-replacement bus services for the \u201csafety and comfort of all passengers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bikes, other than those that fold and meet a size criteria, cannot be brought aboard, and surfboards are banned too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only assistance dogs and animals in a suitable container can board a bus or tram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPassengers with accessibility needs are advised to contact their local train station in advance or ask staff at the replacement bus stops to organise travel,\u201d PTV said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
