On the western side, Russia is launching a new rail route through Azerbaijan into Iran. Across the Caspian Sea, on the eastern Central Asian side, a multimodal route now connects Uzbekistan and India.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-55532\"><\/span>Russian Railways approved the route for a new rail service between Ulyanovsk and Iranian Astara on 20 August, writes Azerbaijani publication Azernews.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recently, we received good news from Russian Railways: the route for the direct cargo block train \u2018Ulyanovsk \u2013 Baku \u2013 Astara\u2019 has been approved\u201d, the governor of the Ulyanovsk province stated. \u201cPreparations are underway for the export train, including for the shipment of agro-industrial and wood processing products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps not entirely coincidentally, Vladimir Putin visited Azerbaijan the day prior to the announcement. Russia and Azerbaijan cooperate to develop the western corridor of the INSTC.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/05\/21\/development-of-instc-proceeds-with-rasht-astara-and-azeri-terminal\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/GNxyM84W8AApw4O-128x128.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/05\/21\/development-of-instc-proceeds-with-rasht-astara-and-azeri-terminal\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">Development of INSTC proceeds with Rasht &#8211; Astara and Azerbaijani terminal<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Multimodally from India to Uzbekistan<\/h2>\n<p>On 21 August, the Uzbek transport ministry welcomed the arrival of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/corridors\/2024\/08\/06\/china-and-india-launch-new-rail-services-to-uzbekistan-reshaping-asian-logistical-landscape\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">earlier announced<\/a> new multimodal transport route between India and Uzbekistan. In a LinkedIn post, the ministry said that freight operator Uztemiryulcontainer had \u201csuccessfully organised a new multimodal route for container transportation from Indian ports of Mundra, Nhava Sheva and Chennai to Uzbekistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cargo was delivered by sea from India to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas and then by rail to Sergeli station. The first freight train, consisting of 20 containers of 20 feet each, covered 2,673 km in 20 days. It presents the country with an easy access route to Russian energy products, notably coal.
