{"id":112622,"date":"2024-08-22T13:39:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T03:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=112622"},"modified":"2024-08-22T13:39:03","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T03:39:03","slug":"trains-will-need-slower-speeds-beneath-parkville-to-protect-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=112622","title":{"rendered":"Trains will need slower speeds beneath Parkville to protect hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Trains in Melbourne\u2019s Metro Tunnel will have to run slower near the new Parkville station, a leaked government report shows, under a plan to limit interference with sensitive cancer and medical scanning equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flaws in the $14 billion project were exposed after a report to the state government\u2019s Infrastructure Development Committee was leaked to&nbsp;<em>The Age<\/em>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5k49f\">revealing construction delays,<\/a>&nbsp;potential compensation claims and plans to dump elements of the mega-project to cut ballooning costs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-48.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-48.jpeg 584w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-48-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The new Parkville station.CREDIT:&nbsp;PENNY STEPHENS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But along with these issues, which the government argues are part of any infrastructure project of this scale, unresolved problems remain with cancer treatment equipment at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Parkville, and with sensitive microscopes at RMIT in the CBD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new rail tunnel runs beneath Parkville\u2019s $1.2 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, which opened in 2016, two years before the tunnel started construction. The Peter Mac is located within the cancer centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trains running through the Metro Tunnel cause electromagnetic interference with medical equipment, an issue that planners began warning politicians in 2015 would need to be managed particularly with an eye to sensitive magnetic resonance imaging machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MRI machines use magnetic fields and radio waves to take detailed pictures of patients.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"953\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-at-1.20.16\u202fPM-1024x953.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-at-1.20.16\u202fPM-1024x953.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-at-1.20.16\u202fPM-300x279.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-at-1.20.16\u202fPM-768x715.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-22-at-1.20.16\u202fPM.png 1408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>At one research centre in the precinct, the Peter Doherty Institute, the train tunnel runs just 20 metres from an ultra-sensitive microscope in the institute\u2019s basement, and has caused major issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leaked report makes clear that patients have not been affected because 11 MRI machines in the Parkville hospital precinct have been moved to upper levels of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Women\u2019s Hospital, or to a cancer centre run by Peter Mac at its old East Melbourne site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report puts costs to the taxpayer so far from the mitigation efforts at $181 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During testing in June, machines at Peter Mac failed to meet reliability standards when trains ran through the tunnel under the hospital, the document says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new rail line is expected to open to the public next year, with peak-hour trains running every three minutes beneath the hospital precinct.
