Throughout company\u2019s 22-state network comprehensive improvements were made to safety infrastructure, tracks, bridges, and public crossings. This annual investment supports Norfolk Southern\u2019s<\/a> commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and resilient service that customers can depend on.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur extensive infrastructure work is an important component of being a customer-centric, operations-driven railroad and represents an investment in the safety of our operations,\u201d said\u00a0Paul Duncan<\/span>, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. \u201cTo safely deliver reliable and resilient service, our rails, bridges, and structures must be maintained to the highest standards, maximising their productive lifespan.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2023, Norfolk Southern\u2019s<\/a> Engineering team delivered a robust schedule of infrastructure improvement projects, including:<\/p>\n

Safety Infrastructure<\/p>\n

108 hot box detectors installed
\n17 acoustic bearing detectors installed
\n218 CTC to ITCM towers added
\n2 Digital Train Inspection portals constructed<\/p>\n

Tracks<\/p>\n

619 track miles of rail work completed, an 8% increase over 2022
\n2.1 million replacement cross ties installed
\n1,745 miles of track surfaced
\n523 panel turnouts and 14 crossing diamonds installed<\/p>\n

Bridges<\/p>\n

40 bridges replaced
\n32,743 bridge ties installed
\n40,398 bridge, culvert, and tunnel inspections completed<\/p>\n

Public Crossings<\/p>\n

110 grade crossing warning systems added<\/p>\n
