{"id":111096,"date":"2024-08-20T13:49:39","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T03:49:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=111096"},"modified":"2024-08-20T13:49:42","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T03:49:42","slug":"no-possibility-trucking-can-fill-gap-of-canada-rail-disruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=111096","title":{"rendered":"\u2018No possibility\u2019 trucking can fill gap of Canada rail disruption"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Canadian trucking industry cannot meet the domestic needs to keep critical supplies and daily goods flowing if a work stoppage happens at the country\u2019s major railroads, according to the leader of the British Columbia Trucking Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no possibility trucking can fill the gap of any labour disruption on railways,\u201d Dave Earl, president and CEO of the BCTA, said in an email to Trucking Dive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/canadian-national-cpkc-teamsters-strike-august-22\/723888\/\">labor deal impasse<\/a>&nbsp;between the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference and carriers Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City has led to a potential work stoppage that could start by Thursday. Both railroads also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/canadian-national-cpkc-impose-more-embargoes\/724306\/\">announced freight embargoes<\/a>&nbsp;last week ahead of a possible shut down of their respective networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earl recognizes the dire situation and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/shippers-brokerages-prepare-contingencies-canada-teamsters-railroad-strike\/716867\/\">impact to supply chains<\/a>&nbsp;should Canada\u2019s railroads stop running. More than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.railcan.ca\/101\/delivering-canadas-amazing-products-to-the-world\/\">900,000 metric tons of goods<\/a>&nbsp;move daily on Canada\u2019s railways, according to the Railway Association of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the soft freight market plaguing the U.S. trucking industry, Canada\u2019s trucking industry is \u201calready running near capacity,\u201d Earl said, adding that \u201croad transportation cannot come close to replacing the movement of goods that will be displaced from railways in the event of a dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BCTA\u2019s motor carrier members operate between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bctrucking.com\/about\">13,000 and 14,000 trucks<\/a>&nbsp;and employ over 26,000 people. Trucking depends on the railroads to haul bulk items including raw materials such as coal, grain and other minerals, Earl said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur members move goods in smaller quantities to places railways don\u2019t go,\u201d Earl said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. trucking companies that operate in Canada are aware of a possible logistics crisis. A spokesperson for ArcBest said the carrier doesn\u2019t expect Canadian rail disruption to impact its operation since most of its freight in Canada is transported over the road but stands prepared to handle any issues if problems arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While trucks will keep some domestic freight moving around Canada should the railroads shut down, it\u2019s the transport of larger items that concern Earl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He pointed to shipments of new vehicles arriving through the Annacis Auto Terminal at the Port of Vancouver, Canada\u2019s largest, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.portvancouver.com\/about-us\/information-updates\/annacis-auto-terminal-capacity-increased-by-more-than-one-third\/\">handles 480,000 vehicles annually<\/a>.
