{"id":106929,"date":"2024-08-13T08:28:39","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T22:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=117091"},"modified":"2024-08-13T08:28:39","modified_gmt":"2024-08-12T22:28:39","slug":"what-driving-the-yanchep-line-is-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=106929","title":{"rendered":"What driving the Yanchep line is like"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Yanchep.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\"><figcaption>Image\/PTA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>With the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metronet.wa.gov.au\/projects\/yanchep-rail-extension\">Yanchep Rail Extension<\/a> now finished, train drivers Karimudeen (Kari) Khan and Matt Leeson shared what it was like to drive the some of the first trains on the 14.5 kilometres of new track as part of the driver familiarisation program.<\/strong><span id=\"more-117091\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With 18 years\u2019 experience as a train driver, Kari took on the role as a pilot in the program, undertaking early training when the line was first commissioned and then training other drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was one of the few who went for training to become familiar with the new line in different weather conditions, drive through gradients which requires track knowledge, and practice timing and scheduling. I was then able to share my knowledge with fellow railcar drivers, including Matt,\u201d Kari explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach day we made three to four trips along the freshly laid track and stopped at every station to familiarise ourselves with the facilities such as toilets, crib rooms and bus stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting to drive on the new route is exciting as for many years we\u2019ve stopped at Butler, but now we get to drive all the way to Yanchep,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Matt has been driving trains for seven years and explains that the job is always evolving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really enjoy transporting people in a timely and safe manner and no two days are the same. We have new trains to drive and different routes to explore each day.
