Mass brawls and violent protests have broken out across the United Kingdom as anti-immigrant protests have caused disturbances in more than 20 cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unspecified number of UK police officers were injured over the weekend as riots spread despite government warnings against violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The demonstrations were kicked off after\u00a0a 17-year-old from Cardiff, Wales<\/a>\u00a0of Rwandan origin was\u00a0charged with murdering three girls in Southport<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teenager was initially falsely identified as a Syrian immigrant which fuelled anti-immigrant fervour and led the English Defence League<\/a> to take to the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n

While demonstrations in London have been mostly peaceful, riots have broken out in other cities including Manchester and Southport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many locations, bricks have been thrown, buildings have been burned and physical confrontations have led to more than 80 arrests nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty arrests were made in Lancashire, another 20 in Humberside, 14 in Avon and Somerset, 10 in Stoke-on-Trent, six in Liverpool and four in Stoke-on-Trent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unrest has been further fuelled by clashes between protesters and counter-protesters amid chants of \u201cpaedo Muslims off our streets\u201d and \u201cNazi scum off our streets\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has warned anyone involved in \u201cunacceptable disorder\u201d would be held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Cooper has been working with police forces to ensure \u201cconsequences\u201d were brought against rioters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has given his \u201cfull support\u201d to UK police as they respond to \u201cextremists\u201d and \u201chate\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking from Downing Street, the Prime Minister criticised a \u201ctiny, senseless minority in our society\u201d for causing the \u201cgrieving\u201d community to \u201csuffer twice as much\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Starmer met on Saturday with several ministers to discuss the riots but has not yet confirmed whether he will convene parliament to address the issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
